NZDPU
Today, climate transition-related data is not reported consistently and is difficult to access. For regulators, investors, and other stakeholders who aim to develop robust net-zero strategies, it has been a struggle to source the comparable, high-quality underlying data necessary to do so. Enter NZDPU—a centralized repository of global company-level greenhouse gas emissions data that will help accelerate the transition toward a net-zero economy.

Goal
To address the global data challenge, French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions Michael R. Bloomberg created the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC) in June 2022. The initial goal was to create a proof of concept to be unveiled at COP28 UAE, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
-
Defining the Platform
There was close collaboration with NZDPU to deeply understand the data and environmental standards that would be reflected on the platform. This understanding defined the flows, user experience, and required technical infrastructure.
-
“Free. Transparent. Accessible to all.”
Different entry points were designed to address the needs of a varied audience of users—from students just learning about climate data to data analysts looking to access the raw data. A contextual data guide also gives users a deeper understanding as they explore the data.

Creating Accountability
At the company level, data explorers can see how emissions are being tracked year over year by a given company, and targets set to lower their GHG emissions.
Moving Forward
The long-term goal for the NZDPU is to capture total global emissions data to foster a transition worldwide to a net-zero economy. To do this, disclosure education is needed, as well as a reporting interface that allows companies to disclose no matter their carbon data literacy.
Digital Style Guide
The visuals balance sharp edges, which represent data accuracy, with round edges to signify smooth ease of use for the platform. The design system was built on top of Material UI, which was selected based on the 6-month timeline to launch.
